New Mercedes-Benz S Class Pricing Announced Maximum safety and exemplary comfort from EUR 70,760 The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, available from Mercedes-Benz outlets and authorized dealerships in autumn 2005, will cost EUR 70,760 (ex-works) for the S 350 with V6 petrol engine (200 kW/272 hp), and EUR 89,668 (ex-works) for the S 500 V8 model (285 kW/388 hp).   8. Motor company Honda has announced plans to develop motorcycles powered by hydrogen fuel cells. By 2009, the company expects to be leasing fuel cell-powered motorcycles, and is also looking to boost the overall efficiency of its hybrid systems during that time by combining it with more efficient engines. Honda is also looking to maintain its position as a leader in the development of fuel cell technology in the coming years. News of the fuel cell motorcycles initiative came as the company announced its expectations for the coming months and years. Predicting growth of 23 per cent by 2006/2007, Honda suggested its annual car sales will reach four million units in that time. The firm is expecting a 1.8 per cent fall in its motorcycle segment this year, down to 10.295 million uniwhile, Harley-Davidson is rumored to be working on a device that will give a fuel-cell motorcycle its patented “potato-potato” exhaust note. Today’s Freelander is loosely based on the archaic Rover 200 platform. Overall length is very close to today’s 4.4m but, with the wheels pushed closer to the corners, insiders report that the car’s stance is much-improved. ‘Overall, the look is not quite as style-minded as the new Discovery,’ said a source familiar with the car. ‘We have to remember that most people come to the Freelander from cars, so we’re not trying to be a small Discovery.’ Key details like the one-bar grille and stepped roof will remain. Other important features are the absence of body cladding and a strong styling swage line along the car’s front wings, retaining the Freelander’s clean and classical styling. The beltline rises towards the rear haunches, like on many cars. Just a single bodystyle – a five-door hatchback – is currently being engineered. Low sales have killed the three-door soft-back model. Codenamed L359, that five-door will be based on a development of the new Focus platform. Known as EU CD, the same platform will underpin the replacement for the Volvo S60, XC60 soft-roader, Ford Galaxy and Ford soft-roader, dubbed MAC. Like on the Ford Focus/ Mazda 3/Volvo S40 project, the term ‘platform’ is really shorthand for a component set that each brand’s designers can delve into when creating their own distinct vehicle, providing commonality of parts hits around 40 per cent. Usually, the target is 60 per cent, but Land Rover’s specific engineering needs have reduced this figure. The new Freelander will stick with a car-derived four-wheel-drive system that eschews a separate low-range transfer gearbox, an omission that saves both weight and complexity. But this second-generation off-roader is expected to be more sophisticated than the current Freelander and is rumoured to include an optional limited-slip rear differential. Engines will be picked from within the Ford empire and tweaked for a torquey SUV application. Land Rover will be able to choose from three four-cylinder petrols: a 115bhp 1.6 litre, 130bhp 1.8 and 145bhp 2.0, which replace today’s single choice of a Rover-derived 1.8. The platform is engineered to take Volvo’s five-cylinder units across the engine bay, although Land Rover will prefer a Ford V6 petrol for the US market. Common-rail turbodiesels from the Ford/Peugeot ‘Lion’ family will replace the BMW 110bhp 2.0-litre unit. An entry-level 115bhp 1.8, mid-range 136bhp 2.0 and 173bhp 2.2-litre are all potential choices for Land Rover’s engineers. A version of the 2.7-litre V6 TD is also under consideration. The chief weakness of the current Freelander is its cabin quality, despite a clever revamp in 2003. Expect higher-grade plastics and fabrics to bring a more quality feel to the cabin. The design itself is understood to be a little less formal than the Range Rover’s and Discovery’s, in a bid to appeal to car buyers who have to be teased out of their hatchbacks and saloons. The Freelander will be pitched as one of the few junior SUVs with off-road ability, but Land Rover is also keen to stress its ability on Tarmac, where most will spend the majority of their time. The car-derived rack-and-pinion steering should make the new Freelander a sharper drive. And, although the exact suspension set-up is still secret, it is reasonable to assume that the EU CD platform’s suspension of front struts and rear multi-link will be heavily upgraded for 4x4 applications. New Freelander’s wider stance and revised four-wheel-drive system should bring welcome increases in grip, roll resistance and high-speed stability. That should help challenge rivals such as Ford's Focus C-MAX, the Honda FR-V and upcoming Vauxhall Zafira for interior practicality. With the C4 awarded the full five stars in recent Euro NCAP crash testing, the new Picasso is almost certain to offer occupants and pedestrians similar class-leading protection. Citroen is also likely to experiment with flexible seating for seven, offering folding and removable rear chairs on the Picasso for the first time. Borrowing heavily from the hatchback, buyers will find an improved interior, featuring better quality materials and increased storage throughout. Innovations from the C4, including its fixed-hub steering wheel, lane departure warning system and laminated side glass, are also likely to appear. The current Picasso is based on the old Xsara hatchback, but the newcomer's C4 underpinnings should mean that the driving experience will be much improved. A wide range of en-gines will be offered from launch, with the only change to the current line-up being the replacement of the 1.8-litre petrol unit with the company's new 2.0-litre motor. A spokeswoman said: "We are in discussions with interested parties at the moment." The 2.1-litre petrol powerplant was designed in-house, and works in tandem with an electric motor to provide 188bhp. The engine has already undergone independent testing at Millbrook Proving Ground, Bedfordshire, where insiders tell us it exceeded Connaught's expectations. A convertible Eclipse version of the lightweight sports model is also on the cards. It will feature a roof made from three electrically operated glass panels which stack beneath the boot- lid. The ambitious firm unveiled a full-sized model of the car at last year's Goodwood Revival in West Sussex, but has kept its interior under wraps. Two designs are being considered - a hi-tech aircraft-style cabin, or more traditional leather-clad option. Meanwhile, the company has applied for 17 patents relating to the car's innovative design and advanced powertrain.

The Camry will be larger in all dimensions than its predecessor and receive a major change in styling more along the lines of the new Avalon and the CCX Concept presented back in 2002. Continuing its onslaught of hybrid vehicles Toyota announced in May that the 2007 Camry will receive a V6 hybrid engine to compete with Honda's V6 Hybrid Accord launched last December. The longstanding 3.0 liter V6 engine will finally take a bow and make way for either a revised 3.3 liter V6 or the new 3.5 liter V6 currently found in the Avalon. Debut expected in Tokyo with sales starting in the New Year in the US. The Camry will be built in the Georgetown, Kentucky plant. It's based on the ca platform (the doors are the same), but with more space in the rear seat. Total lenght=3,75m, width=1,71m. Engine will be the same 1.0 Rocam from ca/Fiesta, with 65 cv. Only 3 doors at launching, maybe 5 later. Those are pics from a 1:1 clay mock-up, subject to changes. The B402 will fit in the Ford line between the ca and the Fiesta. Ford will drop the Brazilian ca price, to compete with the Fiat Mille (Uno), the cheapest Brazilian car currently. The ca became a niche car in Brazil, mostly because the Chevrolet Celta offers more space and the 5-door option for the same price. The B402 will try to compete with the Celta with better arguments.

  22. Tofaş has announced that it will spend 170 million euros designing and building a new 'compact' C-segment sedan in Turkey, which is scheduled to reach the market in 2007. The announcement was made to the Turkish press by Tofaş' new CEO Alfredo Altavilla, who has only been in the job for just a week. "The company has agreed with Fiat to produce the car in its Bursa factory," Altavilla told reporters. The Board of Directors of Tofaş AS. in fact only earlier this month appointed Altavilla to replace the incumbent Diego Avesani, who has returned to Turin where he will assume new responsibilities. Tofas AS is a joint-venture company with the shareholding split between Fiat Auto and the Turkish firm, Koç Holding, and which is listed on the Istanbul Stock Exchange. Koç Holding is Turkey's largest - and oldest car maker - having established the first car factory in the country, back in 1968. The new model will be positioned firmly in the important C-segment - which at present accounts for 48 percent of the Turkish new car market. Codenamed D200, it will superceed the current Fiat Palio and Siena models from the ever-growing 'World Car' family. As with the current models, the new car will also be assembled in Brazil and China, although Tofaş will take a leading role in the new project and it will begin rolling out of the Bursa factory before production commences anywhere else globally. Tofaş plans to manufacture around 60,000 units of this new model per year in Turkey, with almost a third of these being destined for export. Interestingly, Tofaş claims that this 20,000 per annum number will be headed for Western Europe - implying that the new model will be designed and built to the much higher all-rounds standards demanded by discering European consumers, rather than the 'cheap and cheerful' brief that the Palio and Siena models currently adhere to. The D200 project is the second major announcement to be made by Tofaş so far this year. Back in March, Tofas announced a new joint venture between Fiat and the Peugeot-Citroen PSA Group will see a new light commercial vehicle manufactured at its Bursa plant. This project, codenamed 'MiniCargo' will see a 350 million euro investment made. The Fiat Doblo light panel van is also manufactured in Turkey by Tofaş.
