This hydrogen fuel cell powered, gyroscopically balanced, one-wheeled recreational and commuting vehicle provides an extraordinary vision of the kind of personal transport we could be using 20 years from now.

The design brief for Bombadier EMBRIO Concept was to "create highly innovative, functional and exciting products to exceed people's recreational needs" and find the "next thing" in recreational vehicles. The result is a futuristic and minimalistic one-wheeler that is as about far away as you can get from the conventional image of a uni-cycle - a mode of transport normally associated with circuses and street parades.

Balancing Act

The riding position will be similar to a motorcycle with a complex series of sensors and gyroscopes balancing passengers on the single wheel. The rider activates a trigger on the left handlebar to accelerate and turns are made by shifting body-weight rather than actually steering.

When the EMBRIO concept is at rest in "stand-by configuration", the front wheels deploy to the ground like landing gear on a plane to increase longitudinal stability. The landing gear retracts when the vehicle speed reaches 20 km/h but even without the landing gear, the EMBRIO would be stable when motionless because of the gyroscope.

The EMBRIO concept's main power source is a hydrogen fuel cell and additional advanced technologies including a high-performance braking system, active suspension, night vision, a digitally encoded key and robotic assistance would be incorporated into the design.

The Concept is constructed from lightweight materials including Polypropylene, Santoprene, nylon (injection moulding), aluminum (stamping, die casting and robotic assembly), magnesium (casting) and the use of fuel cell technology and recycling of aluminum and polyethylene is designed to make the Bombardier EMBRIO an eco-friendly design throughout its life cycle.

The Bombardier EMBRIO concept is one of several concepts proposed by Canadian based Bombardier Recreational Products and it received the Gold Award at the 2003 Annual Design Awards (Industrial Design Society of America & Business Week Magazine).

It’s called the Lanver Evolution MIEV, which stands for Mitsubishi In-wheel Electric Vehicle. Like its name indicates, the EVO MIEV has four electric motors located in the wheels packaged neatly with the brake assemblies and steering hardware. We posted on Mitsu developing this technology on one of its Colts, but the system on this EVO is different in that it features a hollow-doughnut construction that locates the rotor outside the stator, as opposed to vice-versa in a common electric motor. This offers benefits in terms of power output, space efficiency and weight, the latter of which directly affects the vehicle’s handling. The all-electric EVO MIEV will be competing in the Shikoku EV Rally 2005 being held August 27-28 on the island of Shikoku, Japan. Mitsubishi is using the event to test the system’s range and durability in various environments. Currently the company is one of the few researching in-wheel electric motors, the development and mass-production of which could help draw positive attention to Mitsubishi the same way the Prius did for Toyota. And just imagine a real hybrid EVO with in-wheel electric motors and a 350+hp 2.0T. Mmm… that’d be fun.

Taking centre stage at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show is Mazda's latest design concept, Mazda Sassou. Conceived and designed at Mazda's European Design Centre in Frankfurt, Germany, it is a lightweight, urban vehicle for young, first car customers that makes every day city driving fun, highly practical and economical. A sleek, three-door hatchback, it employs evolved Zoom-Zoom exterior design language with youthful lightness and surprising hidden features. These, combined with advanced interior systems using a USB stick key and an ingenious rear seat morphing system, hint at where Mazda might be heading with a future B-segment vehicle.

Mazda Sassou is the first design concept from a unique approach to show cars for Mazda Motor Corporation this year at three major motor shows - this year's IAA, the Tokyo Motor Show in October and the 2006 North American International Automobile Show next January.

"This is the first of a number of concept cars to be designed consecutively at our regional design centres, namely: Frankfurt (Germany), Yokohama (Japan) and Irvine (California)," says Moray Callum, Executive Officer in charge of Design at Mazda Motor Corporation. "However, despite the design environment in which it may be conceived, you will intuitively identify that this is a car from Mazda. Its characteristics being uniquely Mazda; reflecting the essence of Zoom-Zoom, something we have communicated throughout the World".

"Mazda Sassou was designed to appeal to young, first car-buyers" said Peter Birtwhistle, Chief Designer at Mazda Motor Europe GmbH. "It is a look over the Mazda horizon and what it proposes is new and exciting. It is the result of asking ourselves what stimulates young Europeans today. We feel that they would ideally prefer a vehicle that supports and expresses their lifestyle and at the same time would meet the changing demands of the growing European B-segment. Sassou, then, not only evolves Mazda small car design in a lightweight, fun-looking B-car package, it also represents a new way to express some traditional automotive attributes and provides a first Zoom-Zoom driving experience for young buyers."

The name "Sassou" is a Japanese term that was chosen because it means having a positive state of mind, of looking to the future with optimism. On the horizon, then, is something positive and exciting. Mazda Sassou is not only an advanced evolution of Mazda's Zoom-Zoom design language, but is a symbol of the forward-thinking optimism of the entire organization as communicated by its recently announced Mazda Momentum business plan.

Vauxhall's new giant

It's big, it's bold and it's going to break new ground for Vauxhall. In a world exclusive scoop, Auto Express can reveal the firm's secret plans to make inroads into the executive class for the first time.

And the Luton firm isn't planning to take a conventional route to large car success. Despite the early indications of concept models such as the four-door Insignia, company bosses instead plan to build a truly unique all-wheel-drive five-door with a spacious, MPV-like cabin and an angular, distinctive appearance. A top executive for the firm explained: "We won't do another Omega-style car. It's almost impossible to succeed in that market unless you have a prestige badge, and Saab fills that slot nicely for General Motors.

"That doesn't mean we couldn't do something a bit different at the executive end of the market, though. The Signum proves Vauxhall is always thinking of new and interesting alternatives to the traditional saloon and estate, and we're likely to be even more radical in future." This could mean following the trend set by Mercedes with the B-Class and R-Class to carve ever tighter niches in the new car market.

Our insider went on: "We are looking at several different concepts for a new large car, and a selection of alternatives has been - and will continue to be - tested at customer clinics with current and potential buyers." The picture seen in this week's mag has been produced from information gleaned at these clinics, leading to an accurate view of what Vauxhall has in mind. Many cues are familiar from other recent models, but stylists have made an effort to pen an eye-catching design.

Based on the next-generation Vectra platform - codenamed Epsilon two - the new model will be enormous, with dimensions expected to be larger than a full-sized MPV. Rivalling the forthcoming Ford Galaxy, and the still to be revealed replacement for Volkswagen's Sharan, the as yet unnamed model will replace the Signum, and the discontinued Omega, mixing car-like driving dynamics and a huge cabin capacity.

For now at least, the new Vauxhall is only known as the FLV - Future Large Vehicle - and firm technical details are scarce. What has been confirmed is that the car's power will be fed to all four wheels via a system similar to that featured on the new Frontera. Chassis engineers are expected to ensure that the emphasis will still be on tarmac-friendly handling. The extra traction will allow drivers to tackle some 'soft-roading', but the new model will have a comparatively low ride height, meaning its abilities would be best compared to Volvo's XC70 rather than the XC90.

The 4x4 transmission will be mated to a range of Vauxhall's most powerful engines, including a V6 diesel and the 250bhp 2.8-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine from the Vectra VXR. Inside, comfort and luxury will be the main priority. The newcomer's generous dimensions mean there will be room for seven adults, and Vauxhall will use its Flex7 folding chair system to make this one of the most practical cars in the executive class. Standard equipment will set new standards.

With the launch of the FLV not scheduled until 2007, prices are still being kept very firmly under wraps, but our sources inside Vauxhall have revealed that even entry-level models are likely to cost around £22,000.

The all-new Jaguar XK is the first of a new generation of cars that reflect the best of everything that Jaguar is associated with – from gorgeous, contemporary design to renowned craftsmanship and quality, alongside the latest driver-focused technologies – and, of course, exhilarating performance.

Light and agile, the all-new Jaguar XK accelerates faster, stops quicker than the previous generation, steel-bodied XK8 and has exceptional dynamic abilities, as Jaguar's Chief Engineer Mike Cross, explains: "The XK may be the epitome of sporting elegance but it is also a true driver's car in which we have managed to combine a very special balance of superb driving dynamics and comfort."

Traditional Jaguar craftsmanship elements have been retained on the all-new Jaguar XK, but it's the use of aerospace technologies that have resulted in the most technically advanced Jaguar production car ever created.

One of the key elements of the all-new Jaguar XK is the use of latest technologies including Jaguar’s industry-leading aluminum body structures and rivet bonding techniques, both recently introduced in the construction of Jaguar's full-size XJ sedan. Both techniques make the XJ sedan significantly lighter and stronger than its competitors, which benefits handling and fuel economy.

Jaguar design director Ian Callum describes the XK as having "clean lines, a purposeful stance and exquisite proportions". "The fundamental values of Jaguar design do not change," explains Callum. "We took influences from our heritage and evolved them to produce a car that is beautiful, visually fast yet undeniably modern – just as Sir William Lyon's (Jaguar founder) own designs were in their day."

The all-new XK is manufactured and assembled in a state-of-the-art production facility at Jaguar's Castle Bromwich plant in the West Midlands region of the United Kingdom.

Making its world premiere next month at the Frankfurt International Auto Show in Germany, the all-new Jaguar XK will go on sale in North America next spring as a 2007 model year product.

Convertible model will also be available – details will be announced later this year.

Kia do it at present complete terrible well with the SUV's Sportage and Sorento. Reason enough for the koreanen to introduce SUV's still two in 2008, or 2009. Kia open end 2006 a new factory in Zilina, Slovakia. There the Volkswagen Golf-concurrent, the ED (European Dream) and the two new small SUV's of the link will roll. Both SUV's as a matter of fact under Kia-embleem, and therefore not as Hyundai are only sold, as at the Sportage/Tuscon, however, the case is
